Kalimpong is a small hilly town, populated with Nepalese people is a part of Darjeeling District, just east of Nepal. Kalimpong is siutated at about 1,240m above the sea level. Kalimpong has been known for it’s educational institutions, schools established by the missionaries during the British rule, Dr. Graham’s Holmes (named after Scottish preacher – John Anderson Graham) is one of the well known school located up in the hill in a quiet location on the north side of the town.
Education used to be one of the major source of economy of the local people, bringing students from Bhutan, various parts of West Bengal and Nepal. But this has gone cold in recent years.
Rais, Limbus, Lecphas are some of the people living in Kalimpong. In the year 1986, Nepalese people (GNLF) demanded separate state of Gorkhaland. This demand was ignored by then state Chief Minister Jyoti Basu, instead dispatched truck loads of CRP to this hill town. The year 1986 June-July, (It was Sunday) – saw the violence in Kalimpong between GNLF and CRP. No state of Gorkhaland, but Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council was formed.
Kalimpong is a little Nepal outside Nepal.
